The search for 18-year-old Matthew Morey remains suspended after he reportedly entered the rain-swollen Mississinewa River near Albany, Indiana, on Wednesday evening, August 12, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple law enforcement and emergency agencies.
Authorities said four people entered the river from an iron bridge along Gregory Road, northwest of Albany, shortly before emergency crews were called at approximately 8:30 p.m. Three of the individuals were located and brought to safety, while Morey remained missing.
Multiple agencies joined the search operation, including Delaware County sheriff’s deputies, Eaton and Albany police, firefighters, Indiana Department of Natural Resources personnel, and Indiana State Police.
Search crews used boats, drones, riverbank teams, and an Indiana State Police helicopter as they worked to locate Morey in the river and surrounding areas.
The operation was temporarily suspended at approximately 12:30 a.m. Thursday before crews resumed the search around 8 a.m. However, worsening river conditions ultimately forced authorities to halt the operation again at approximately 2 p.m.
Officials cited rising water levels, swift currents, and significant debris as serious safety hazards for the search teams. Chief Deputy Jeff Stanley said authorities planned to resume the operation when conditions become safe enough, emphasizing that investigators and rescue personnel would not give up the effort to find Morey.
Morey, who is associated with the Muncie area, has also been identified as a member of the Delta High School boys varsity basketball team, where he wore No. 20.
His disappearance has deeply concerned family members, friends, classmates, teammates, and others across the community. For those who know Matthew, the uncertainty surrounding his whereabouts has made an already difficult situation even more painful.
The dangerous river conditions have complicated the search, forcing authorities to balance the urgency of finding Morey with the safety of the people conducting the operation. Officials are expected to continue monitoring conditions and resume the search when it can be done safely.
Meanwhile, members of the community are coming together to support Morey’s family during the difficult and uncertain period.
A candlelight vigil for Matthew Morey is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, August 14, at Union Chapel, 4622 North Broadway, Muncie, Indiana. The gathering will provide family, friends, classmates, teammates, and community members an opportunity to stand together and offer support to his loved ones.
As authorities prepare to continue the search when conditions permit, the community remains hopeful for answers and continues to keep Matthew Morey and his family in their thoughts.
